“He’s had a redemption arc, trust me,” Lilith had explained. Watching his self-satisfied smirk as he lounged in her living room, making himself right at home, Reyna wanted to call her friend and ask her to get rid of him. There was only one thing that stopped her: Lilith and Mark.

As the only human in their friend group, Reyna knew that she was only considered a liability. With the increase of monsters in the area and a plot to take her life, she knew she had to stick to a serious training schedule or else rely on her friends to protect her. She wouldn’t let them put their life on the line for her, not again.

If that meant working out with a personal trainer who was only there for the kick of annoying her, then so be it. She moved over to the chair furthest away from Damien and took a seat.

“I’m taking a break from your bizarre sports equipment. Australia is experiencing a heatwave right now, in case you had forgotten?” Reyna said to him as he shot her a condescending look for sitting down.

“Funny, I thought it was just hot because of me.” He grinned. Reyna ignored him, which made him even more interested in pushing her buttons. He leaned forward, resting his head on his knees and pouting. “Come on, we’re both stuck here for a month. Bodyguard and protectee. Can’t we at least get along, maybe even have some fun?”

“More like warden and prisoner,” Reyna scoffed.

Damien huffed, throwing himself back against the couch. “So dramatic! Fine, but when I’m bored out of my mind and searching for a new table tennis table for sale online, you should know that it’s your fault.”

“We are not playing table tennis.” Reyna took another gulp of her water to avoid his gaze. It always made her feel uncomfortable. She clicked her tongue before adding, “Besides, you’d lose.”
